Meet Joyce
Personal Background
I grew up in Detroit, Michigan raised by a single mother on welfare. Public school, hard work, and support from my community helped open doors for me. I worked my way through school and was the first person in my family to graduate from college.
Those early experiences shaped my belief that public education creates opportunity. I know what it means to struggle, and that perspective has guided my career and volunteer work ever since.

Family and Community Connection
My family and I have called Alameda home for 25 years. I raised my children here, and they attended Alameda public schools, with my youngest graduating from Alameda High School in 2026.
Alameda is a community that cares deeply about its schools. Over the years, I have been actively involved in local civic life, serving on school committees and nonprofit boards. I am a graduate of Leadership Alameda.

Professional Experience
I am a Certified Public Accountant whose career has been dedicated to nonprofit organizations and affordable housing. My work has focused on helping mission-driven organizations manage resources responsibly and serve their communities effectively.
This financial experience is directly relevant to the work of a school board. I believe strong financial oversight, transparency, and responsible budgeting are essential to ensuring that schools have the resources they need to support students and teachers.

Commitment to Education
For more than 20 years I have been actively involved in Alameda schools.
I currently serve as Chairperson of the Parcel Tax Oversight Committee and have previously served as a Board Member of the Alameda PTA Council, and a Board Member of several school PTAs, and the Paden Elementary School Site Council.
During my time at Paden Elementary, I helped raise funds for and install a new playground. I have also worked on a successful campaign to pass Alameda Unified School District parcel taxes that provide essential funding for our schools.

Why I am Running
Alameda's public schools are central to the strength of our community and the future of our students.
I am running for the Alameda School Board because I want to help ensure that every student has access to strong academic programs, dedicated teachers, and safe and supportive schools. With my background in financial oversight, nonprofit leadership, and years of involvement in our schools, I hope to contribute thoughtful leadership and practical experience to support Alameda's students and families.
